Piet is an experienced Database Consultant and DBA specializing in Oracle databases, High-Availability and troubleshooting. He is in IT since 1987, works with Oracle databases since 1994. Independent since 2013, he now looks for short-term or part-time consulting assignments. Piet combines technical knowledge with experience in global organizations. His energetic personality, curiosity and language-skills make him ideal for pioneering projects or troubleshooting IT problems in a multi-national environment. Piet also invests a lot of effort in maintaining a network of Like-Minded Oracle specialists worldwide and is a regular speaker at international user group events and symposia. The presentation shows the use of a Thick-DB concept a database-centered architecture: good and bad.
From the diagnose-data of a badly performing system we show the symptoms, and how the “root cause” was identified. Via the diagnosis we show some possible fixes and their limitations. This system was in fact a very cleverly built “Thick DB” application. But even a good concept on EXA-llent hardware can be abused to the point where users complain.
After this presentation, attendees will be able to make better-informed decisions on the use of stored procedures and notably the use of functions.

Management-decisions, Hardware-reality and intended cost-savings forced us to concentrate many databases on a small number of (old-ish) machines. The presentation will describe the challenges we faced during migration and in operations. We will indicate the success-factors and challenges for consolidation, and point out fixes and alternatives.
